Bangkok Suvarnabhumi to the city: Airport Rail Link, taxi or private transfer
Bangkok traffic sets the rules. How the Airport Rail Link, the metered taxi queue and a booked driver compare, and what to know about arriving at BKK.
Suvarnabhumi is about 30 kilometres east of central Bangkok, which on paper is a 40-minute drive and in practice can be anything up to two hours. Every option below is judged against that one fact. The second fact: most visitors arrive after a long flight, often at night, with a time difference to absorb.
Airport Rail Link
The elevated train runs from the basement of the terminal to Phaya Thai, with a connection to the Skytrain, in about half an hour. It is cheap and traffic-proof. It is also crowded at commuter hours, has limited luggage space and leaves you at a station from which most hotels still need a taxi or a walk in the heat.
Metered taxi
The public taxi queue on the first floor of the terminal is organised with a ticket system. Taxis are metered, with an airport surcharge and expressway tolls paid by the passenger. The queue can be long after evening arrivals, and the ride into the city depends entirely on traffic.
Private transfer
A booked driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board and takes you to your hotel at a price fixed when you book, tolls included. After a long-haul flight the difference is simple: no queue, no negotiation, a vehicle with air conditioning already running, and the certainty that someone is waiting whatever time you land. The driver follows your flight; the free waiting time at Suvarnabhumi is 45 minutes from landing, and immigration at peak times can use most of it, so say so in the notes if you want extra time planned.
Where in Bangkok?
- Sukhumvit and Silom: the expressway makes these the fastest destinations from the airport.
- Riverside hotels and the old town: longer, with the final part through city streets; a driver who knows the hotel entrance saves real time.
- Don Mueang airport connections: a frequent request for domestic flights; the road between the two airports is the one place where traffic is least predictable, so allow a generous margin.
Beyond Bangkok
Suvarnabhumi is the starting point for private transfers to Pattaya, Hua Hin, Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi. These are fixed-price journeys of one to three hours where a private car is the standard choice for anyone not travelling by tour bus.
Practical notes
- Have your hotel name and address in Thai script if you can; it helps every driver in the city, including ours.
- Keep small notes of local currency for incidentals, but the transfer itself is settled at booking.
- Child seats are not a given in Thai taxis; with a booked transfer, request them in the notes and they are fitted before the pick-up.
