Barcelona El Prat to the city: Aerobús, metro, taxi or private transfer

Two terminals, a bus that works well, a metro that does not go to the centre and a city where a fixed-price car makes sense for families and cruise passengers.

Barcelona El Prat to the city: Aerobús, metro, taxi or private transfer

El Prat is close to the city, about 12 to 15 kilometres south-west, which keeps all options reasonable in time. The choice is mostly about luggage, the number of travellers and where in Barcelona you are staying. Here is the picture.

Aerobús

The express bus from both terminals to Plaça de Catalunya is the best-known option and a good one: frequent, direct, about 35 minutes. It drops you in the middle of the city, which is perfect if your hotel is around the Eixample or the upper Ramblas and a problem if it is in the Gothic quarter's pedestrian streets or in Barceloneta.

Metro and train

Metro line L9 Sud serves both terminals but does not reach the centre without a change, and the journey is long. The suburban train leaves from near Terminal 2 only. Both are cheap and both involve stairs, changes and walking with bags.

Taxi

Barcelona's yellow and black taxis are plentiful and metered, with airport supplements. The ride to the centre takes 20 to 35 minutes depending on the hour. Queues at Terminal 1 can be long when several flights land together.

Private transfer

A booked driver meets you in the arrivals hall of T1 or T2 with a name board, helps with the luggage and drives to the door of your hotel or apartment at a price fixed when you book. It is the comfortable option for families, groups, late arrivals and for any address inside the old town, where the driver knows where a car can and cannot go. The free waiting time at El Prat is 45 minutes from landing.

T1 or T2?

  • Terminal 1 is the large modern building used by most full-service airlines.
  • Terminal 2, in three sections, serves many low-cost carriers.
  • They are several kilometres apart, linked by a shuttle bus. Your flight number tells us which one; the driver waits at the right terminal.

Cruise passengers

Barcelona is one of the busiest cruise ports in Europe and the airport-to-port transfer is a classic. The port terminals are a short drive from El Prat; a private car with the luggage of a whole family is simpler than any combination of bus and taxi, and the pick-up time can be matched to the ship's boarding window.

Beyond the city

El Prat also serves Sitges, Castelldefels, the Costa Brava resorts and the inland wine region. For these destinations a fixed-price private transfer avoids a change in the city centre and is usually the fastest door-to-door option.
