JFK to Manhattan: AirTrain, taxi or private car service

Fifteen miles that can take forty-five minutes or two hours. How the AirTrain, the yellow cab flat fare and a booked black car compare for arrivals in New York.

JFK to Manhattan: AirTrain, taxi or private car service

John F. Kennedy airport is about 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan, in south-east Queens. Distance is not what matters in New York; traffic is. The same journey takes 45 minutes at midnight and well over an hour and a half at the evening rush. Here is how the main options handle that reality.

AirTrain plus subway or LIRR

The AirTrain connects all terminals to Jamaica station, where you change to the Long Island Rail Road for Penn Station (fast and comfortable) or to the subway (cheap and slow). It is the budget option and the only one immune to traffic. The price you pay is in changes, stairs and the final leg from the station to your hotel with your bags.

Yellow cab

Yellow cabs from JFK to Manhattan charge a flat fare, plus tolls, a surcharge at peak hours and the customary tip. The official taxi line outside each terminal is organised, though long after big arrivals. Note that the flat fare applies only to Manhattan; the outer boroughs and New Jersey run on the meter.

Private car service

New Yorkers call it a black car. A driver meets you in the arrivals hall of your terminal with a name board, takes the luggage and drives to your address at a price fixed when you book, tolls included. It is the choice for families, groups, business travel, late-night arrivals and for anyone who does not want to discover the fare at the end of the ride. The driver follows your flight and the free waiting time at JFK is 45 minutes from landing.

Terminals

JFK has several terminals around a central loop and is in the middle of a long rebuilding programme, so terminal numbers and walkways change. Your flight number tells us the terminal; the driver waits at its arrivals hall. International arrivals should allow time for immigration: mention it in the notes and we plan the waiting accordingly.

Realistic journey times by road

  • Late evening and early morning: about 45 minutes to Midtown.
  • Daytime off-peak: around an hour.
  • Weekday rush hours: 90 minutes or more. The driver chooses between the Van Wyck, the Grand Central Parkway and the Belt Parkway according to live traffic.

Beyond Manhattan

Private transfers from JFK to Brooklyn, Long Island, Newark airport connections, Westchester and New Jersey are common and priced as fixed fares, which is where a booked car has the clearest advantage over a metered cab.

Luggage and vehicle class

A sedan takes up to three passengers with standard luggage. For four or more, or for golf bags and large suitcases, choose a minivan or an SUV class where available; the price difference is smaller than a second cab.
