Private transfer, taxi or shared shuttle: which one is right for your trip

Three ways to leave an airport, three different trade-offs between price, time and certainty. A plain comparison to help you choose before you land.

Private transfer, taxi or shared shuttle: which one is right for your trip

Every airport offers the same three options to reach the city: a licensed taxi from the rank, a shared shuttle that fills up and stops along the way, and a private transfer booked in advance. None of them is right for everyone. The best choice depends on how many you are, how much you carry, when you land and how much you value knowing the price before you leave home.

Taxi from the rank

The taxi is the default choice because it requires no planning. You queue, you get in, you pay what the meter says. In many cities the fare from the airport to the centre is fixed by law, which removes the biggest uncertainty. The weak points are the queue at peak hours, the language barrier in some countries, the occasional refusal of card payments and, for families, the near impossibility of getting a child seat.

Shared shuttle

The shuttle is the cheapest door-to-door option and works well for solo travellers with light luggage and no fixed schedule. You share the vehicle with other passengers going in the same direction, which means waiting for the van to fill and several stops before yours. Budget extra time, and avoid it when you have a connection, a check-in deadline or small children.

Private transfer

A private transfer is a vehicle and a driver reserved for you, at a price agreed in advance. The driver follows your flight, meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with the luggage and drives directly to your address. It costs more than a shuttle and, on short routes, about the same as a taxi. What you buy is certainty: the price, the vehicle class, the waiting time and a phone number to call if something goes wrong.

How to decide in thirty seconds

  • Alone, light luggage, flexible timing: shuttle or taxi.
  • Two to three people with luggage: a private sedan usually costs the same per person as two taxi rides would, with the certainty of a fixed price.
  • Family with children: private minivan. Child seats are requested at booking and fitted before you arrive.
  • Four or more people, or ski, golf or oversized luggage: private minivan or minibus. One vehicle, one price, no splitting the group.
  • Late-night or early-morning arrival: private transfer. Taxi ranks thin out and shuttles stop running; a booked driver is there whatever time the flight lands.
  • Business travel: private transfer with an executive class vehicle and a receipt issued in the company name.

The hidden cost nobody writes down

Time. Thirty minutes in a taxi queue after a long flight, or an hour on a shuttle that stops at five hotels before yours, are real costs that do not appear on any receipt. When you compare prices, compare the whole journey from the gate to your door.

On Pickup Transfers every quote is a fixed price that includes the driver, fuel, tolls and 45 minutes of free waiting at the airport, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up. Search your route and compare the vehicle classes before you decide.
