Rome Fiumicino to the city centre: your transfer options compared
Train, taxi or private car from Leonardo da Vinci airport to Rome: how long it takes, what to expect at arrivals and when a private transfer is worth it.
Leonardo da Vinci airport sits on the coast, roughly 30 kilometres south-west of the centre of Rome. The distance is not the problem; the traffic on the motorway into the city and the walk through Termini station with luggage are. Here is how the main options compare and how to choose.
Leonardo Express train
The non-stop train to Termini is the fastest fixed-time option, about half an hour door to door between the airport station and the platform. It is a good choice if your hotel is near Termini and you travel light. The weak points: the walk from the terminal to the station, the stairs and crowds at Termini, and the final leg to your hotel, which in Rome's historic centre often means a taxi anyway.
Regional train and buses
The regional train stops at Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina and suits travellers staying in those neighbourhoods. Coaches to Termini are the cheapest option and the slowest, with a journey that depends entirely on traffic.
Taxi
Licensed white taxis wait outside arrivals. Rome applies a fixed fare between the airport and the area inside the Aurelian Walls, which covers most of the historic centre; destinations outside the walls run on the meter. Expect a queue at peak hours and check that the taxi is a licensed one with the fare displayed.
Private transfer
A booked driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with the luggage and drives to your door at a price fixed when you book. It is the right choice if you arrive at night, travel as a family or group, stay in an apartment with a precise address, or simply want to know the price before you land. The free waiting time at Fiumicino is 45 minutes from the actual landing and the driver follows your flight.
How long does it really take?
By road, count about 45 minutes to the centre in normal traffic and more at rush hour or on Friday evenings. The driver takes the motorway and the Rome ring road or the Via del Mare depending on your destination and on the traffic of the moment.
Arriving at Fiumicino: practical notes
- Terminal 1 serves most Schengen and domestic flights, Terminal 3 most long-haul and non-Schengen arrivals. Your driver waits at the terminal of your flight.
- Passport control for non-EU arrivals can take time at busy hours: mention a long-haul arrival in the notes and we plan the waiting accordingly.
- Rome's historic centre has limited-traffic zones. A private driver with the right permit can reach hotels inside them; a rental car usually cannot.
Beyond the centre
Fiumicino is also the gateway to Civitavecchia cruise port, to the Castelli Romani and to day trips towards Tivoli or Ostia Antica. Private transfers to the port are a popular alternative to the train and the cruise shuttles, especially for groups with luggage.
